QUALIFICATION

The APP World Tour brings the World's very best athletes to the some of the World's most iconic and high profile Cities for a spectacle like no other, while embracing participation at every level through its @citypaddlefestival approach and providing a unique access point to the World Championship Tour platform for aspiring athletes.

2020 has been an unprecedented year for the APP World Tour. Due to the complications arisen from Covid-19, the APP has been forced to cancel all of its events. The final schedule for the 2021 season of the APP World Tour has now been released, providing a dynamic, high profile series of events to challenge the World's very best and entertain on site and online spectators alike as the Tour returns to Center Stage once again in 2021. 

**Important Note**

Please note that the below information relates only to the APP World Championship Tour in terms of qualification: all other divisions hosted at APP World Tour and City Paddle Festival Events will feature open, unrestricted entries to allow participation at every level, from Pro-Am down to entry level and fun racing. Stay tuned for the opening of entries that is scheduled for early 2021 and will be accessible through a registration gateway on this site and www.citypaddlefestivals.com

RACING

Overview:

In 2021, the Racing Tour will feature its City Paddle Festival Events at Stop 1 (location tba early 2021), London, Switzerland, Osaka, San Diego and Paris, while Maui completes what is a very well rounded Tour as the single SEA event for 2021 (Sports, Environment, Action - more to follow on this).

There will be a total of 7 Events on the APP World Tour in 2021, allowing athletes 1 distance and 1 sprint discard for the season: this means that the combination of athletes best 6 sprint and 6 distance results will determine the Overall World Champion for both Men and Women, as well as discipline Champions for the Tour (i.e. Distance & Sprint).

 

Prize-money levels for 2021 are set at $30,000 per event, with final prize-money breakdown to be announced following consultation with the Athlete Advisory Board that will be formally introduced in early 2021.

 

Official Qualifying events in each major global region have been established to determine the final spots on the 2021 APP World Tour as detailed below, and a more built out qualification process is in the process of being established for the 2022 season and will be published here.

Qualification for the 2021 APP World Racing Tour:

The Elite APP World Championship Tour line up of athletes will consist of the following:

  • Men: 32 athletes made up of:

  1. Top 20 Men from 2019

  2. 2 International Wildcards* 

  3. Top 2 finishers from each of 5 Regional Qualifiers for the Tour**

  • Women: 24 athletes made up of:

  1. Top 12 Women from 2019

  2. 2 International Wildcards*

  3. Top 2 finishers from each of 5 Regional Qualifiers for the Tour**

Please note that the participation number difference from Men to Women is based on historic participation levels on the APP World Tour. Should demand increase for Women participation, the APP will of course increase the Women’s field.

*Wildcard Process

  • 2 International Wildcards will be awarded for Men & Women for the 2021 Season:

    • Applications to be considered for these wildcard spots should be sent by email to athletes@appworldtour.com

    • Additional wildcards will be awarded at each event at the discretion of APP Sports Director and local organizing committee, to take into account local talent and up and coming international talent

  • There will be a fixed deadline for all qualified athletes to confirm their entries for each event to allow for the event wildcard process to be initiated

**Regional Qualifier Events 2021
For 2021, the APP has designated 5 flagship Qualifying Events across the globe to identify the final 10 spots on Tour for both Men and Women. The top 2 Men and Women from each of these events will qualify for the 2021 APP World Tour. These events are independent events that meet the standards of the APP, have been identified because of their regional representation and can provide a legitimate qualification process for athletes to earn their spot on the 2021 APP World Tour. For 2021 these qualification events will be in the following regions, with final event details to be announced on Tuesday 22nd December right here and across all APP platforms:

1.    Central & South America Region 
2.    Australasia Region
3.    Asia Region
4.    North America Region
5.    Europe Region

Board Carriage:

The APP will be adopting a Container solution for 2021 to transport Athlete's boards from our Opening Race Event in May, all the way around the World to each of the events and back to Europe for the Final in Paris. More to follow on this solution to follow early 2021.

The APP World Tour will maintain the same points system for the 2021 season, with each race format garnering points towards the Overall World Title. Points will be awarded per distance or sprint / technical race finish as follows:

Overall Champions for each Individual Race Format (Distance and Sprints) from the Tour will be celebrated at the end of each season: i.e. APP Long Distance Champion & Sprint Champion.

SURFING

Overview:

In 2021, the Surfing Tour will feature 3 iconic stops at World Class waves across the globe. Beginning in Tahiti in September, the Tour will then move onto Portugal in November and finish in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria for the Grand Final, also in November.

2021 APP World Tour events will feature Open Trials Events together with the main World Championship Tour competition, and also include Youth events across all stops on Tour.

The Surfing field for the World Championship Tour will feature 36 Men and 18 Women. As with Racing, please note that the difference in participation numbers from Men to Women is based on historic participation levels on the APP World Tour. Should demand increase for Women participation, we will of course increase the Women’s field.

The Elite World Championship Surfing Tour will consist of:

  • Men: 36 Athletes made up of:

    • Top 28 Men from 2019​

    • 4 Wildcards per Event*

    • Top 4 finishers in theTrials**

  • Women: 18 Athletes made up of:​

    • Top 12 Women from 2019​

    • 3 Wildcards per Event*

    • Top 3 finishers in the Trials**

*Wildcard Process

  • 4 International Wildcards will be awarded per event for the Men’s field & 3 International Wildcards for the Women for the 2021 Season:

    • Applications to be considered for these wildcard spots should be sent by email to athletes@appworldtour.com

    • Additional wildcards will be awarded at each event at the discretion of APP Sports Director and local organizing committee, to take into account local talent and up and coming international talent

**Trials Events

Each APP World Tour Surf Event will also feature an Open Trials. These Open Trials will be completely open entry for anyone wanting to take part, up to a maximum of 48 Men and 48 Women. Entries will be secured on a first come, first served basis for these Open Trials, and should maximum entries be reached, a waitlist will be established.

 

Youth Event: there will also be a youth division in conjunction with all Surfing events, with entries available online on each specific event page. These are open competitions, but will be subject to potential maximum numbers, so make sure to enter early to secure a place in the Youth event. Results Calculation and Rankings

Event Result:

  1. Champions will be crowned for each event, with each result counting towards the Overall Rankings and World Title Race

  2. Formats will be a mixture of 4 and 3 person heats as well Man on Man / Woman on Woman from the Quarterfinals on in the Main Event

Official Rankings and World Title:

  1. There will be no discards in the 2021 season

  2. Athletes overall ranking will be determined by his / her performance across all events on the Tour

  3. Any points ties will be broken in the following:

    1. First: by single higher results: e.g. if athlete ‘A’ has a 2nd and a 5th and athlete ‘B’ has a 3rd and a 4th, athlete ‘A’ will finish ahead of Athlete ‘B’ – each individual result in each format will be counted in points according to the points structure below

    2. In the unlikely event that there is still a tie for the World Championship Title, a ‘Surf off’ will take place between the two athletes in question to be determined by the APP World Tour Race Director at the Final event

OVERALL

The APP World Tour celebrates not only the individual disciplines of Stand Up Paddling, but given the well rounded abilities of so many of our World Tour Athletes, we celebrate an Overall World Champion for both Men and Women that is able to excel across both Surfing and Racing.

Official Rankings and Overall World Title Calculation:

The Overall Result will be determined by a single Points allocation for each athletes’ position in the respective discipline. This points allocation will be calculated using the points breakdown below (same as Racing for individual placings). e.g. a 2nd (8,000 pts.) and a 5th (5,000 pts.) Please see above points allocation under Racing.
