ATHLETES AND QUALIFICATION

The APP World Tour brings the World's very best athletes to the some of the World's most iconic and high profile Cities for a spectacle like no other, while embracing participation at every level through its @citypaddlefestival approach and providing a unique access point to the World Championship Tour platform for aspiring athletes.

The 2020 season for the APP World Tour will kick off on June 26th in Pornichet, France 2020 and culminate in Paris on the weekend of the 4th December after 8 World Championship Tour Stops that span the globe and will crown the 2020 Men and Women's World Champions for both SUP Surfing and Racing.

RACING

Overview:

In 2020, the Racing Tour will feature its City Paddle Festival Events in Pornichet, Osaka and Paris, all consisting of both Sprint and Distance Races, complemented with core market events in Maui (Downwind Distance Special) and Gran Canaria (Surf Sprint Racing) to provide a very diverse set of challenges and highly competitive global arena for the World's best.

In total there will be 6 individual race results towards the overall World Title in 2020, with one discard allowed from the 6 race results (whether it be a sprint or distance result) allowing athletes one bad result, or to favor their stronger suit when it comes to Overall World Title implications on the APP World Tour.

As has been the case in previous years, we are still celebrating the individual Event Title winners through the combination of sprint and distance results as is the case in Pornichet, Osaka and Paris, and for the stand alone disciplines in Gran Canaria and Paris. However, the Overall Title will be calculated from the individual race results with the single race discard.

Prize-money levels will remain at US$30,000 for dual discipline events for 2020, with the single discipline events set at US$20,000 with final prize-money splits to be announced following consultation with the Athlete Advisory Board being formally introduced in 2020. Stay tuned.

You will see below the structure for qualification for the 2020 APP World Tour as announced in early 2019:

1.    The Elite APP World Tour Professional field will consist of the following:

  • Men: 32 athletes made up of:

  1. Top 20 Men from 2019

  2. Top 5 from the US Cup

  3. Top 3 from major European Races

  4. Top seed from South America & Asia Races

  5. 2 Wildcards per event

  • Women*: 20 athletes made up of:

  1. Top 10 Women from 2019

  3. Top 3 from major European Races

  5. 2 Wildcards per event

* This field size can be increased based on demand from qualified Women

2.    We are introducing a Qualifying Series through all 5 of the APP World Tour Events in 2020, coupled with opportunities through the established US Cup and select major European Races – full details to be announced over the coming 30 – 60 days. The goal is to solidify a legitimate qualification process that can provide real structure for the sport for years to come, and a pathway to a place on the APP World Championship Tour.

Entry process:

1.  Pre-qualified Athletes (please see below) will have until April 1st to commit to the Tour for the year (email athletes@appworldtour.com

2.  For the Qualifying Series, entries will open for all events soon, so stay tuned to www.appworldtour.com and @appworldtour

Board Carriage:

We have spent a lot of time this month researching options for board carriage for the 2020 season and this is the situation:

1.    We have sourced the option of a single container carrying boards on the following route:

  • The container will be loaded in Pornichet

  • It will be shipped directly to Osaka

  • From Osaka, it will go directly to Gran Canaria

  • It will then leave from Gran Canaria and end up in Paris

*Maui is not included in this shipment, as there is not enough time between Pornichet and Maui to make a shipment work – we also considered that likely Maui would be a different kind of board from the other venues, so it would be a different board from the regular shipment. That being said, we are waiting on some air freight subsidies to be able to present options for those that need them

3.    There will be a cost for using this shipment option, but it will certainly be cheaper than shipping boards independently around the world and the more people that commit, the cheaper it can be.

4.    We therefore request that all those interested in participating in the board shipment program to email us asap at athletes@appworldtour.com

5.    We can then provide final pricing and a deadline for commitment so that we can secure your board’s safe and guaranteed shipment around the world for the Tour

The Trials Event is Open to everyone, although maximum numbers might be set specific to each event, so remember to enter early.

If you are outside the Top 24 Men and Top 10 Women and you believe you should receive a Wildcard, make sure to enter the Trials event as a back up to ensure you have a spot in the event.
